The Heart Is Deceitful above All Things

The Heart Is Deceitful above All Things

Lies, deceit, betrayal, and cheating
Racing hearts — the pounding, beating
Drowning out the sound of anything
More than what you feel and see
Hurt and pain, this endless reeling
Mind replays unwanted feelings
Can’t forget and can’t forgive
But until you do, can you truly live?

Build a wall, build up defenses
Don’t let them tear you down, defend this
Right to stand up for yourself
Don’t take a chance for someone else
Don’t trust the words that others say
Don’t take, and oh, don’t give away!
Look out for you, ’cause no one will
Friend or enemy — both can kill

In an attempt to drown their lies
You’ve made yourself a fine disguise
Choosing what you will believe
Making truth what you want it to be
Remember all the things they said
Twist them, turn them — turning red
In anger now, your mind begins
This process to yourself avenge

Subconsciously, you went too far
And now you see them for who they “truly are”
They are the culprits, you’re convinced
Nothing else even makes sense
You’re perfect now, in every way
There’s no guilt here — no mistakes
And don’t dare try to change your mind
If we can’t see, we must be blind

So share your story, make it known
Already, it’s become your own
No more rehearsals in your mind
Are necessary — let it fly
No justification is required
It’s believable, you’ve started your fire
And though they try to put it out
Your flames cannot contain themselves

But truth is relative, they say
And to this story, two sides remain
Yours I’ve heard — only the one
But I fear this story’s just begun
For should I hear their side, I wonder
Would “the truth” still be so clear? I wonder…
Or would I find myself unsure?
Perhaps sides were taken prematurely

I must confess, my thoughts now wander
And through the pieces, now, I ponder
What is truth, and what is lie?
What’s fact, and what is alibi?
The truth is, I may never know
But I do know God’s still in control
A Judge without the need of jurors
So this truth I need not to procure

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (Jeremiah 17:9, KJV)
